SPSA to Hold Public Hearing on Proposed Regional Solid Waste Management Plan Amendments

(April 18, 2007 Chesapeake, VA) – The Southeastern Public Service Authority (SPSA) is considering amendments to the June 2006 Regional Solid Waste Management Plan for Southeastern Virginia to include two new proposed facilities. The proposed amended plan is available to the public as copies of Amendment 2 can be obtained at SPSA’s regional office and via the SPSA website at www.spsa.com/publications. The document is called “Regional Solid Waste Management Plan, Draft Amendment 2 – April 2007.”
          A public hearing will be held on Thursday, April 26, at 6:00 pm in the Regional Board Room, located at 723 Woodlake Drive, Chesapeake for the purpose of hearing comments on the proposed amendments to the plan.
          Written comments on the proposed amendments to the plan will be accepted through May 11, 2007. Comments should be submitted to: Richard M. Cheliras, Director of Waste-to-Energy, 3809 Elm Avenue, Portsmouth, VA 23704-7101.

SPSA has been providing efficient and environmentally sound waste disposal services to the region and its residents since 1985. SPSA’s solid waste management system includes waste-to-energy, yard waste composting, drop-off and curbside recycling as well as other recycling programs, household hazardous waste collection, landfilling, landfill gas-to-energy and education programs. This integrated waste management system enables SPSA to put 57% of the waste it receives to a beneficial use, thus allowing the region to reduce its dependence on landfills.
