(Chesapeake, VA, May 18, 2007) – We regret that the Suffolk City Council has not included funding in its FY 07-08 budget for continuation of the SPSA 18-gallon bin curbside recycling program. This program represents a major opportunity for residents to do their part and contribute to the continued protection of our region’s environment. Experience has shown that when communities make this choice, recycling participation drops.
While the City has chosen to not continue the curbside recycling program, we are pleased to learn that the City is planning an expansion of the SPSA drop-off recycling program. Through that program, residents have an opportunity to recycle many of the same commodities accepted in the 18-gallon bin program. We will work closely with the City in that effort. SPSA's intention is to provide our members with the absolute best service for those programs which they desire.

SPSA has been providing efficient and environmentally sound waste disposal services to the region and its residents since 1985. SPSA’s solid waste management system includes waste-to-energy, yard waste composting, drop-off and curbside recycling as well as other recycling programs, household hazardous waste collection, landfilling, landfill gas-to-energy and education programs. This integrated waste management system enables SPSA to put 57% of the waste it receives to a beneficial use, thus allowing the region to reduce its dependence on landfills.
