SPSA Approves Resolution Re: Yard Waste Facility
Effective June 1, the Facility Will No Longer Accept Leaves and Grass
(May 24, 2007 Chesapeake, VA) – At the May 23, 2007, Southeastern Public Service Authority’s (SPSA) Board of Directors meeting, the Board approved a resolution which authorizes Executive Director John Hadfield to execute agreements with Virginia Beach necessary to close the existing yard waste site and to lease a new site at the Virginia Beach Landfill.
A copy of that resolution is available here.
Also, beginning June 1, 2007, the Yard Waste Facility, located at 1991 Jake Sears Road adjacent to the Virginia Beach Landfill II, will no longer accept leaves and grass. Items which will continue to be acceptable include: brush, wooden pallets, tree trimmings, and wood chips. Leaves and grass will continue to be acceptable at other designated SPSA facilities. Those include all of SPSA’s transfer stations, the Regional Landfill in Suffolk, and the Refuse Derived Fuel Plant in Portsmouth.
Visit the SPSA website tips on environmentally-friendly lawn management practices. Residents also are encouraged to check with their communities’ Public Works Departments for other tips for managing leaves and grass.

SPSA has been providing
efficient and environmentally sound waste disposal services to the region
and its residents since 1985. SPSA’s solid waste management system
includes waste-to-energy, yard waste composting, drop-off and curbside
recycling as well as other recycling programs, household hazardous waste
collection, landfilling, landfill gas-to-energy and education programs.
This integrated waste management system enables SPSA to put 57% of the
waste it receives to a beneficial use, thus allowing the region to reduce
its dependence on landfills.
