DEQ Reports SPSA Region Achieves 55 Percent
Recycling Rate for 2006
(Chesapeake, VA – August 20, 2007) – In a July letter issued to the Southeastern Public Service Authority (SPSA), the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality indicates that the region’s recycling rate was 55 percent for 2006.
“We are thrilled with this accomplishment. On behalf of the Board of Directors, I want to publicly thank the employees involved. It’s the employees of SPSA who have made this possible,” says John S. Hadfield, SPSA Executive Director. He adds, “Recycling is an important and vital part of the SPSA system. We will continue to strive to improve our programs, services, and efficiency in offering recycling and other services to the region.”
In addition to recycling the ash generated through SPSA’s waste-to-energy process, other agency recycling programs include:
- Drop-off Recycling: There are numerous drop-off recycling centers located throughout the communities SPSA serves. Residents may bring recyclables such as aluminum and steel cans, newspaper, plastic, glass, and cardboard.
- Business Recycling: SPSA offers curbside recycling service to businesses and multi-family units such as apartments and condominiums. Customers receive pickup of newspaper; office paper; aluminum cans, foil and pie pans; green, brown and clear glass bottles and jars; #1 and #2 plastic bottles; steel and tin food cans.
- Used Motor Oil Recycling: SPSA accepts used motor oil from residents only at most of its facilities.
- Household and Car Battery Recycling: Household battery drop boxes are located at SPSA's Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Collection Facilities. At these facilities, items such as AA, C, 6-volt and button batteries are accepted for recycling. Car batteries are also accepted.
- Yard Waste Recycling: Tree trimmings are converted into mulch at the Virginia Beach Yard Waste Processing Facility. The mulch is sold to landscapers, nurseries and residents under the brand name "Nature's Blend."
- Household Appliances Recycling: Household appliances, including refrigerators and air conditioners are referred to as white goods and may be recycled into scrap metal (once the freon has been removed).

SPSA has been providing
efficient and environmentally sound waste disposal services to the region
and its residents since 1985. SPSA’s solid waste management system
includes waste-to-energy, yard waste composting, drop-off and curbside
recycling as well as other recycling programs, household hazardous waste
collection, landfilling, landfill gas-to-energy and education programs.
This integrated waste management system enables SPSA to put 57% of the
waste it receives to a beneficial use, thus allowing the region to reduce
its dependence on landfills.
