SPSA, GIRL SCOUTS’ COASTAL COUNCIL JOIN ON ENVIRONMENTAL BADGE

(CHESAPEAKE, VA, November 14, 2006) – Area Girl Scouts who want to earn a badge showing interest and competence in environmental stewardship can now do so, thanks to a program offered by the Colonial Coast Girl Scouts Council with assistance from the Southeastern Public Service Authority. The new patch is shown here for this achievement.
Among the ways Scouts can earn the patch are by touring SPSA facilities such as the waste-to-energy system, engaging in craft projects that turn recyclable materials into useful household objects, and assisting SPSA at public events.
“SPSA is proud to align with the Colonial Council of the Girls Scouts to help create a new generation of environmentally aware citizens,” said Beth Garrison, Environmental Educator.  “Appreciation of, and care for, our surroundings is a mission of both SPSA and the Girl Scouts, so our collaboration on a badge program is a rewarding and appropriate project for both of us.

SPSA has been providing efficient and environmentally sound waste disposal services to the region and its residents since 1985. SPSA’s solid waste management system includes waste-to-energy, yard waste composting, drop-off and curbside recycling as well as other recycling programs, household hazardous waste collection, landfilling, landfill gas-to-energy and education programs. This integrated waste management system enables SPSA to put 57% of the waste it receives to a beneficial use, thus allowing the region to reduce its dependence on landfills.
