Flying higher! SPSA recycled 57 million beverage cans in 2000-2001 for enough aluminum to make a dozen jumbo jets.
According to Boeing there is 147,000 pounds of aluminum in a 747 aircraft. In fiscal year 2001-2002 SPSA recycled 837.8 tons of aluminum beverage cans or,
according to Connecticut Metals about 57 million cans. 837.8 tons X 2000 pounds = 1,675,600 divided by 147,000 = 11.3 – close to a dozen.

PRESS ROOM SPSA THANKSGIVING DAY SCHEDULE (November 21, 2006; Chesapeake, VA) -- For the Thursday, November 23, Thanksgiving Day Holiday, all of SPSA's administrative offices will be closed. Also, all operating facilities will be closed with the exception of the following facilities which will observe a regular work day:
Finally, for curbside recycling, Norfolk, Southampton County and Smithfield residential customers will be serviced as normal on Thursday, Thanksgiving Day. SPSA has been providing efficient and environmentally sound waste disposal services to the region and its residents since 1985. SPSA’s solid waste management system includes waste-to-energy, yard waste composting, drop-off and curbside recycling as well as other recycling programs, household hazardous waste collection, landfilling, landfill gas-to-energy and education programs. This integrated waste management system enables SPSA to put 57% of the waste it receives to a beneficial use, thus allowing the region to reduce its dependence on landfills.
