Flying higher! SPSA recycled 57 million beverage cans in 2000-2001 for enough aluminum to make a dozen jumbo jets.
According to Boeing there is 147,000 pounds of aluminum in a 747 aircraft. In fiscal year 2001-2002 SPSA recycled 837.8 tons of aluminum beverage cans or,
according to Connecticut Metals about 57 million cans. 837.8 tons X 2000 pounds = 1,675,600 divided by 147,000 = 11.3 – close to a dozen.

PRESS ROOM SPSA Christmas Holiday Schedule (December 19, 2006; Chesapeake, Virginia) -- For the Monday, December 25, Christmas Day holiday, all of SPSA’s administrative offices will be closed. Also, all of SPSA’s operating facilities which service the public will be closed. Finally, there will no curbside recycling collections on Monday, December 25. Routes scheduled in Chesapeake on this day will be serviced on Wednesday, December 27, 2006. SPSA has been providing efficient and environmentally sound waste disposal services to the region and its residents since 1985. SPSA’s solid waste management system includes waste-to-energy, yard waste composting, drop-off and curbside recycling as well as other recycling programs, household hazardous waste collection, landfilling, landfill gas-to-energy and education programs. This integrated waste management system enables SPSA to put 57% of the waste it receives to a beneficial use, thus allowing the region to reduce its dependence on landfills.
