White Goods/Bulky Scrap Metals Recycling
All white goods/bulky scrap metals are sold and marketed through a partnership with the Bi-Metals Corporation. Approximately 120-125 tons are recovered from various SPSA operations and sources. SPSA
generates revenues from the sale of the materials.
Tidewater Fibre Corp.
Since 1989, SPSA has worked with Tidewater Fibre Corp. in the management of recyclables collected through SPSA's curbside recycling program. At their facility in Chesapeake, SPSA delivers all of the
materials collected in the curbside as well as drop-off recycling program.
Soilex, Inc.
Opened August 20, 1999, Soilex specializes in the treatment and recycling of petroleum-contaminated materials and receives the majority of the region's waste materials that come from oil spills and
other emergency response actions. This facility will allow us to receive larger volumes of materials that, once treated, may be used in other beneficial ways at the landfill. What the partnership
means to SPSA is additional material to cover landfilled waste that we do not need to have to pay for and avoided fuel and transportation costs.
Bi-Metals, Inc.
SPSA uses the Bi-Metals Recycling Facility located at the Regional Landfill to recycle and reuse ferrous metals like steel food cans. Over 19 million pounds of metal are recycled annually through
this facility. Based out of Connecticut, Bi-Metals, Inc. operates this facility for SPSA and has several other such facilities across the United States.
U.S. Energies
Methane gases from the Regional Landfill are reused to create electricity. The firm of U.S. Energies owns and operates a facility located at the Regional Landfill site to manage the methane gas
program. SPSA is paid royalties from the sale of the electricity to Dominion Virginia Power. Additionally, the gas collection system keeps SPSA's Regional Landfill in compliance with air emission
limits required under EPA's New Source Performance Standards of the Clean Air Act. The facility at the site creates enough electricity to power over 6,000 homes annually. In addition to the sale of
electricity to Dominion Virginia Power, US Energies and SPSA constructed a 2.3 mile low pressure pipeline to Ciba Chemicals in 2001. The pipeline provides Ciba with low-moisture methane as a boiler
fuel source. SPSA receives a percentage of the sale of methane to Ciba.
