How
You Can Help
SHOP
SMART
•
Take a canvas bag to the grocery store or
reuse bags from previous visits.
• Buy products made
of recycled materials such as paper towels,
napkins, computer paper, etc.
• Buy in bulk. Economy
sized products use less packaging and often
cost less per ounce.
• Choose concentrates.
Beverages, soups, even laundry detergents
can be mixed in reusable containers rather
than bought in large bottles or cans.
• Avoid excess packaging
in recyclable containers and then be sure
to recycle them.
• Go for durable over
disposable. Use sponges, linens and ceramic
mugs instead of paper towels, napkins and
Styrofoam cups.
• Choose refillable
pens and lighters, rechargeable batteries,
and razors with replaceable blades.
• Use proper maintenance
and care to make the things you buy last longer.
Items such as lamps, furniture, appliances
and electronic equipment can get a new life
by being rebuilt or refurbished.
• Rent items you don't
use often to cut down on discards. Check the
telephone directory to find services and locations.
OTHER
HINTS
•
Donate used goods such as clothes, furniture,
toys and books to charities. Also buy these
items by shopping at thrift stores, garage
sales, consignment shops, etc.
• Pack lunches in reusable
containers.
• Share a newspaper
or magazine subscription with a family member
or friend.
• Use the library as
often as possible.
• Donate old books
and magazines to jails, library sales, nursing
homes, schools and charities.
• Write on both sides
of paper.
• Eliminate junk mail.
