Proper Disposal of Propane Cylinders
(CHESAPEAKE,
VA – May 9, 2008) – With outdoor grilling season at hand, the Southeastern
Public Service Authority (SPSA) is reminding residents with empty propane tanks
or cylinders that they should take them to a SPSA facility for proper disposal,
rather than put them in with the regular trash. Improper disposal of gas
cylinders by discarding with typical refuse can cause deadly explosions.
Virginia regulations prohibit disposal of these items in a landfill.
For proper
disposal propane cylinders can be recycled at any of SPSA’s Household
Hazardous Waste facilities including the following full-time collection
locations:
·
Virginia Beach Landfill II at 1991 Jake Sears Road, Va. Beach –
Open Monday – Saturday, 8am – 4pm
·
Regional Landfill at 1 Bob Foeller Drive, Suffolk – Open Monday
– Saturday, 8am – 4pm
SPSA consistently advises area residents of the health and safety threat
from improperly disposing of propane, oxygen, acetylene, compressed gas tanks
cylinders and other hazardous waste in the regular trash. Chuck Harrell, SPSA’s
Regional Landfill Superintendent said, “With warmer weather and outdoor
activities beginning such as cookouts, SPSA employees will work even harder to
ensure we identify and remove propane tanks and cylinders, which have been
improperly thrown out with the regular trash.”
He added, “Improper disposal of these items are a health and safety risk
as they are fire hazards and can explode if mishandled.” Disposal in this
fashion can cause serious injuries to those that handle the trash throughout the
entire waste disposal cycle.
