Curbside Recycling Calendars Run in Local Newspapers

(Chesapeake, VA – December 6, 2007) – In an effort to save printing costs, the Southeastern Public Service Authority (SPSA) annually runs advertisements in community newspapers for the region’s more than 120,000 residents who receive SPSA’s curbside recycling services.

This approach provides a method for citizens to receive the new schedules, while avoiding the need for SPSA to print more than 100,000 of the post-card sized calendars and/or to conduct a door-to-door delivery of them. The calendars also are available electronically via the SPSA website (http://www.spsa.com/recycling/recycling.asp).

This has been SPSA’s approach with the distribution of the annual schedules due to citizen requests for hard copies of the calendars as not all residents have computer availability or accessibility.

The calendars will be run on the following schedule:

·        Sunday, December 9:  Norfolk Compass

·        Sunday, December 9:  Chesapeake Clipper

·        Sunday, December 9: Tidewater News (for Franklin and Southampton County residents)

·        Wednesday, December 12:  Smithfield Times (for Smithfield residents)

For more information, contact Felicia Blow at fblow@spsa.com or (757) 420-4700.

SPSA has been providing efficient and environmentally sound waste disposal services to the region and its residents since 1985. SPSA’s solid waste management system includes waste-to-energy, yard waste composting, drop-off and curbside recycling as well as other recycling programs, household hazardous waste collection, landfilling, landfill gas-to-energy and education programs. This integrated waste management system enables SPSA to put 57% of the waste it receives to a beneficial use, thus allowing the region to reduce its dependence on landfills.
