SPSA's recycling programs offer residents many ways to get involved and help make a difference in southeastern Virginia's environment. If you are looking to recycle your electronic goods such as computers, please click here.

SPSA operates the following programs to accept a variety of recyclables:

Curbside Pick-up
SPSA offers curbside recycle service to approximately 135,000 homes in southeastern Virginia. Our programs are designed to allow for maximum flexibility for SPSA’s member communities with the provision of both 18-gallon bin recycling as well as 95-gallon, single stream automated recycling at the curb.

Chesapeake
 

Chesapeake has switched to a new provider for their recycling.  Click here for the city's web page detailing their new program.


Franklin
Franklin offers automated recycling using a 95-gallon cart.

  • Glass (clear, green or brown glass bottles and jars) Please NO window glass, drinking glasses, etc.
  • Metals (aluminum, foil and pie pans, steel/tin cans)
  • Papers (clean newspapers and advertising inserts, unwanted mail, magazines and catalogs, and cardboard boxes - please flatten boxes and put inside recycling container.) Please NO packing materials such as Styrofoam blocks or peanuts.
  • Plastic (Plastic bottles Only) Any other type of plastic is NOT acceptable; this includes plastic bags, Styrofoam blocks and packing materials. Please put these products in your garbage container, NOT your recycling container.
  • Telephone books

Unacceptable Items:

  • Plastic - Microwavable Meal Containers, Yogurt Containers, Containers which contain Hazardous Chemicals or Oil Products (such as Motor Oil). These items should NOT be placed in your recycling container.

     

Preparation Tips

  • Rinse out bottles and cans.
  • Carts must be curbside by 7:00 a.m.
  • Leave three (3) feet between the cart and other items at the curb.
  • Crush metal cans and plastic jugs. This helps fit more material into your cart.
  • Place only those items listed below in your cart.
  • Bring your cart off the street as soon as possible after your recyclables are
    collected. This helps prevent inadvertent damage.

Norfolk
Norfolk has elected to transition to automated recycling using a 95-gallon cart.

Acceptable recyclables in the 95-gallon automated program are: activity book

  • Glass (clear, green or brown glass bottles and jars) Please NO window glass, drinking glasses, etc.
  • Metals (aluminum, foil and pie pans, steel/tin cans)

Isle of Wight
Isle of Wight County maintains drop-off only recycling sites for their residents and the Town of Smithfield currently utilizes the 18-gallon bin service. Typical recyclables accepted at the drop-off sites or in the curbside recycling program (for the Town of Smithfield only) include:

  • Newspaper
  • Aluminum cans, pie plates and foil
  • Clear, brown and green glass
  • #1 and #2 plastic bottles only
  • Steel food cans
  • Telephone Books

Collection Schedule:

 

*The recycling dates in parts of Smithfield will be changed to every other Thursday (it will coordinate with their refuse collection) starting March 15. The Grimesland area will be affected, this includes: South Church Street from the Cypress Creek Bridge to the Route 10 by-pass, all streets west of South Church Street including Wilson Road, Talbot Drive and other adjoining streets, Benn's Church Boulevard, east and west of Benn's Church Boulevard which includes Waterford Oaks.

Portsmouth
The City of Portsmouth offers drop-off only recycling for its residents.

Typical items accepted in the drop off recycling program include:

  • Aluminum cans, pie plates and foil
  • Clear, brown and green glass
  • #1 and #2 plastic bottles only
  • Steel food cans

Southampton
Southampton County provides 18-gallon bin recycling for its residents of Courtland, Newsoms, and Boykins.

Acceptable Recyclables are:

  • Newspaper
  • Aluminum cans, pie plates and foil
  • Clear, brown and green glass
  • #1 and #2 plastic bottles only
  • Steel food cans
Preparation Tips:
  • Please remove caps and lids
  • Crush plastic bottles and aluminum cans
  • Tie newspapers or place in brown paper bags, and then put the papers on top of or beside your bin.

The City of Suffolk offers drop-off only recycling for its residents.

Drop-off Sites
There are 39 drop-off recycling centers located throughout the communities SPSA serves. Residents may bring recyclables such as aluminum and steel cans, newspaper, plastic, glass and cardboard. Most centers are open 24 hours a day and are available to area residents free of charge. Learn more...


Used Motor Oil
SPSA provides a free service to southeastern Virginia residents to recycle used motor oil. SPSA accepts used motor oil from residents only, no businesses. Residents are asked to bring no more than five gallons of used oil per visit. Many service stations also accept used oil. Learn more...


Household & Car Batteries
Household battery drop boxes are located at SPSA's Household Hazardous Waste facilities. At SPSA's Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Facilities accepts batteries such as AA, C, 6 volt and button batteries for recycling, free of charge from area residents. Car batteries are also accepted at SPSA's HHW facilities. Residents must deliver them to the HHW facilities for recycling. Learn more...


Household Appliances
Household appliances, including refrigerators and air conditioners are referred to as white goods and may be recycled into scrap metal once the freon has been removed. Residents who wish to dispose of appliances should contact their communities' public works department or call SPSA at (757) 548-2256 for proper disposal instructions. Learn more...
